What is the Point of Marriage?

This post was submitted by Stella.

So, it?s the weekend and I've been doing my own bit to contribute to the society by heaping my electricity bill while putting in my time on the couch. I am a TV troll. I watch pretty much every TV show you can imagine. Sometimes I wonder how I have time for anything else. Anyway, I digress; back to the point of this post.

Amongst the multitude of reality shows I watch, I noticed a common trend among a majority of the characters that were in relationships: They were living together (a few with kids or planning on having kids). Basically, living like a ?married couple? and for some reason a few of the women were unhappy because "he hadn't put a ring on it."

I look at the couples around me as well and it?s the same situation. One lady in particular stands out to me. She finally got her proposal and is in the thick of planning her wedding. As part of her planning, she has come up with a list of things that must change after marriage. The list includes things like no more late nights with the boys, no friends crashing at their place, and it goes on. They?ve been living together for years and they have two kids (6 & 2). In my eyes, their situation isn?t changing; all they are doing is adding the title of husband/wife and Mrs for the lady.

They already have the companionship, they are sharing responsibilities, supporting each other's dreams and all that good stuff that marriage is supposed to be about. What motivation does the guy have to change his ways? With the current divorce rates I ask, are people getting married just to have the ceremony to splash cash and show off just how much money they are making? Or is it that people believe that the piece of paper they sign will guarantee that they will be together forever? Is getting married just another trend??

I personally feel that if you?ve got a good thing going adding the titles ?Husband? or ?Wife? can only add undue pressure to the relationship. I don?t know if I have been living in my own little bubble for so long that I'm late at noticing this trend, but if so, please forgive me but I still want to hear your thoughts.

In the world we live in today and the way ?dating? is handled, what is the point of marriage??

(AP) ? Howard Kuljian and his family were out for a walk on a damp, overcast morning at Big Lagoon beach, playing fetch with their dog Fran as 10-foot surf churned the water just feet away like a washing machine.

Signs near the beach warned of "sneaker waves," the kind that suddenly roar ashore.

Kuljian tossed a stick that took the dog down to the water's edge, and in an instant, authorities said, a wave swallowed it, setting off a nightmarish scramble.

"Everything kind of snowballed from there," Coast Guard Lt. Bernie Garrigan said.

Kuljian's 16-year-old son, Gregory, ran to save the dog, only to be captured by the surging surf himself. Kuljian, 54, followed, and then his wife, Mary Scott, 57. On shore, their 18-year-old daughter, Olivia, and Gregory's girlfriend could only watch.

Both parents' bodies were later recovered, but the boy ? presumed dead ? is still missing.

The dog eventually made it back to shore.

News of Saturday's tragedy shocked many in the small college town of Arcata on the rough Northern California coastline about 280 miles north of San Francisco.

Students at Gregory's high school wore green in his memory Monday.

By late afternoon, more than 1,300 people "liked" a Facebook page set up by the teenager's friends called "Wear Green for Geddie" ? using his nickname. Dozens tweeted tributes with the hash-tag (hash)WearGreenForGeddie.

"I will always remember him no matter how long," wrote Emmalaya Owen on the Facebook page. "Especially how he was such an upbeat happy person or how he tried to put up 'Be Happy' propaganda posters he drew around school."

Others were trying to come to terms with the deaths. His sister graduated last year.

"He was just a friendly guy, and everyone who knew him liked him, and his family was very close," said Day Robins, a high school senior. She said Gregory and his family were active in school athletics and sailing.

At Big Lagoon beach, a short drive from Arcata, signs posted near the parking lot warned beachgoers not to turn their back to the surf and to pay special attention to sneaker waves.

"Because the beach is designed that way, when that 10-foot wall breaks, it surges up on the beach and surges back really fast," said Garrigan, the Coast Guard officer. "It's like a cyclical washing machine."

As the family walked along the beach, Howard Kuljian threw the stick and the dog gave chase, said Dana Jones, a state parks district superintendent.

Seeing his son in the water, Kuljian leapt to action, and disappeared into the frigid water.

Gregory managed to pull himself back onto the sand, but after realizing his father was drowning, both he and his mother went in to save him.

As Olivia and the girlfriend watched in horror, a nearby bystander called police. By the time help arrived, it was too late. Jones said the officer wasn't able to get to the family members because of the high surf.

Garrigan said the search for the teenager was stopped because a person without a wetsuit could not survive for long in the cold surf.

The Coast Guard deployed a helicopter and two motorized life boats to find the teenager, but thick coastal fog made the search difficult. The parks department also called off its search.

"When there is shorebreak like that, you don't even have to go into the water to be pulled into the sea," Jones said. "It's a reminder to be real careful around the ocean."

Property News India and Featured Real Estate Stories - CommonFloor

It is found that many developers in National Capital Region (NCR) and Mumbai have cut down property prices by around 15 percent, as demand and rent more or less remains the same.

However, in a few parts of Mumbai, there was nearly 0. 8% improvement in rent, signifying some demand.

Due to weak demand, a lot of real estate agents have already postponed commercial realty projects and switched to residential projects. Few new projects in the first half of the year were launched at reduced price ranges than some existing stocks in the area by developers who are in dire need of cash.

The commercial properties in New Delhi continues to be under pressure while zero projects have been launched presently. But there is an increased demand for commercial properties in Bangalore and Mumbai.

Creativity and Affect

The authors of this volume attempt to cohere the field of creativity and affect in a scholarly fashion by categorizing and characterizing some of its major features, including environmental influences; underlying processes; specific affective states; the role of atypical or pathological personalities; unconscious processes; physiological components; proactive and reactive stimuli; intrinsic motivation; eminence versus everyday creativity; and testing of assessing the affective component of creativity. The authors also examine and discuss the role that emotions, feelings and moods play in the creative process. This volume also provides a vehicle for students and psychotherapists, with which they can fully appreciate the feelings generated by the creative process and the various stages of it. How does a creator feel during its more mundane phases? Can he or she tolerate the frustration of failing and being unsuccessful most of the time? What is the real joy of achievement, success, and ultimate acceptance by ones peers in a given field? Do we have to exhibit major psychopathological features in order to achieve eminence in specific fields? What is the role of mind altering substances, mood disorders, and the like? This volume answers these questions and more. Author: Shaw, Melvin P./ Runco, Mark A./ Shaw, Melvin P. Engineering plants for biofuels

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? With increasing demands for sustainable energy, being able to cost-efficiently produce biofuels from plant biomass is more important than ever. However, lignin and hemicelluloses present in certain plants mean that they cannot be easily converted into biofuels. A study published in BioMed Central's open access journal Biotechnology for Biofuels appears to have solved this problem, using gene manipulation techniques to engineer plants that can be more easily broken down into biofuels.

Plants high in lignin and hemicelluloses -- lignocellulosic biomass -- have a high content of pentose sugars that are more difficult to ferment into fuels than plants with hexose sugars. In order to be useful for biofuel production, scientists need to be able to engineer plants with smaller amounts of xylan -- the major non-cellulosic polysaccharide -- present in secondary cell walls.

With this in mind, a research group from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, USA, used 3 mutant strains of Arabidopsis deficient in xylan -- irregular xylem (irx) mutants irx7, irx8 and irx9 -- in order to engineer plants with low xylan content and improved properties for easier breakdown of carbohydrate into simple sugars (saccharification). The irx mutants normally exhibit severe dwarf phenotypes that result from xylem vessel collapse and consequent impaired transport of water and nutrients. The team hypothesized that restoring xylan biosynthesis in the plants would complement the mutations.

To reintroduce xylan biosynthesis into the xylem of irx7, 8 and 9, Henrik Scheller and colleagues manipulated the promoter regions of vessel-specific VND6 and VND7 transcription factor genes. Significantly, they found that the ensuing phenotypes completely restored wild-type growth patterns in some cases, resulting in stronger plants with restored mechanical properties, whilst at the same time maintaining a low overall xylan content and improved saccharification properties that allowed for better breakdown into biofuels.

Plants with up to 23% reduction in xylose levels and 18% reduction in lignin content were obtained, whilst normal xylem function was restored. The plants also showed a 42% increase in saccharification yield after pretreatment.

Lead author Scheller said, "These results show that it is possible to obtain plants that have reduced amounts of xylan in their walls while still preserving the structural integrity of the xylem vessels. The xylan engineering system we present here is a great step towards tailored bioenergy crops that can be easily converted into biofuels. He continued, "This approach in Arabidopsis has the potential to be transferred to other biofuel crop species in the near future, in particular, the poplar species."

These results from this study provide hope that a viable alternative to fossil fuels may soon be available.

Streaming audio playing slow with clicks - Forum - Main Forums : PC ...

Sample rate mis-match would be my guess. Do you have a sound interface that locks to an
external clock source?

Is there a manual setting for clock speed on your interface within the mixer software? Is this set?

Generally this only happens if you have Windows thinking it needs to convert the sample rate to 96kHz or similar, when the card is in fact running at 48kHz or similar.

FitMamaEats - Home - Gearing Up for Harvard Pilgrim's Well ...

What have I gotten myself into? I'm usually a wuss when it comes to challenges so I surprised myself by agreeing to participate in Harvard Pilgrim Health Care's Well Together Challenge, which pairs health bloggers who encourage each other to try something new for one month. I've enjoyed reading the other blogger teams' experiences as they braved new fitness classes, cooked with unusual ingredients, meditated, or trialed quick and easy family recipes. Check out Harvard Pilgrim's Facebook page to read those posts and get other great wellness tips.

Well, my turn has come (1st post next week)! My blogger in crime is Michele from A Yummy Mummy, a seriously cool mom with three beautiful young daughters. I was instantly inspired and felt my blood pressure drop when looking at her blissful photography and absorbing the laid-back feel of her blog. Lately my job(s) have become more demanding, which on the one hand is rewarding because my work involves helping people but I've also recognized that when I don't do things that nourish my inner being, I'm a little?lot crankier and feel the boundaries of my world shrinking. So I've come up with two personal weekly challenges inspired by Michele to help change up my routine: 1) Learn hula hooping and 2) Express gratitude for little things during the day that make me smile.

I recall briefly having a hula hoop when I was about 10 years old and could even do it around my knees. But wow has hooping evolved. Some gyms offer weighted hoops as part of a fitness class that strengthens the core, and if you search on YouTube you'll discover that it has become a sport. It's probably bigger in Europe than here as most of the instructors in the videos have European or Australian accents. This one video blew me away (no it's not on fast forward!) and wondered if I could achieve even 30 seconds of what this hooper accomplishes here:

Thankfully, Michele created a great video of tricks for me that feels more manageable.

I'm excited to get started...

5th Annual Phalen Park Light Display Helps Local Charities ? CBS ...

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) ? A holiday tradition that benefits local charities gets underway Tuesday night in St. Paul.

It?s the fifth year for drive through light display ?Holiday Lights in the Park? at Phalen Park. It?s great entertainment to look at, but more importantly it provides assistance to local charities.

Organizers with the project said a majority of the displays are new this year, including a finale with an under sea adventure that includes a sunken pirate ship, scuba divers and Santa Claus scuba diving.

It?s also a Minnesota-themed display with the parks and recreation, featuring the biggest display they?ve ever had with all the options people have when they visit the state?s parks. That includes displays for fishing, rock climbing, skiing.

The display costs $10 on weekends and $8 on weekdays to see, and the proceeds go towards four local charities. Those include the Union Gospel Mission, Second Harvest Heartland, a youth program called ?Under Construction? and the St. Paul Parks Conservancy. Entry fees go to those charities, which have partnered with event organizers for the last five years.

The display features hundreds of thousands of LED light bulbs which are energy efficient, running at about one-third the power of a normal light bulb. There are more than 60 light displays for people to take in, and the display goes through Jan. 1, 2013.

There?s a CD soundtrack for sale at Kowalski?s Markets around the Twin Cities, and that purchase gets people a free pass to the display.

Snooki, Jionni LaValle Talk Son Lorenzo And Their Lives As New ...

Partying is nothing compared to motherhood.

At least that's how Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi feels.

The "Jersey Shore" star, 24, is "obsessed" with 2-month-old son Lorenzo and can't wait to celebrate the holidays with her little meatball.

"Motherhood is perfect!" Snooki told HuffPost Celebrity at MTV's Restore the Shore special on Nov. 15. "I always wanted to be a young mom and I thought [at] 26, and I?m going to be 25, so I kind of did it right. And it just changes your life," she continued. "I don?t care about partying anymore. I haven?t had a drink in, like, a year! Well, not that long, but I don?t think about that stuff anymore. It?s just about family and my business really."

And Snooki's fiance, Jionni LaValle, vouches for her lifestyle change, saying, "she's an unbelievable mother."

"She?s obsessed with him, I'm obsessed ... it?s two months already. It?s crazy," LaValle told HuffPost Celebrity. "It?s a lot of fun, but we?re both very tired. We?re always up taking turns, who?s sleeping, who?s feeding ... but it?s what you got to do."

Although they're not sure whom Lorenzo takes after in the personality department, LaValle knows one thing for certain: "He looks just like Nicole. I mean to the T. It?s crazy."

The happy family is looking forward to being together during the holiday season and already had a great time on Halloween.

"Halloween was canceled because of Sandy, so we just dressed up," Snooki explained. "We just put the costumes on and took a picture so we had a memory and we're going to tell Lorenzo there was a hurricane and you didn't have a first Halloween."

"We were superheroes," LaValle added. "He was Superman, I was Captain America and she was Wonder Woman."

As for Thanksgiving and Christmas, Snooki revealed they're going to spend the holidays in Jersey with LaValle's family.

"It?s a first for everything," LaValle gushed. "Christmas, we can?t wait for, Halloween we couldn?t wait to dress him up. It?s just you can?t wait for everything to come up with him. Now it?s, 'When is he going to walk? When is he going to talk?,' We?re excited."

Snooki and Jionni plan on tying the knot in "a year, a year and a half."

Normal Biology: Neglected Collections

After my college graduation last May, I've been using my free time to go back through the bug collections I did while still an undergraduate. I had a lot of material left over--both dry specimens and ethanol specimens, along with photographs and lists to organize. I never quite had the time to do it while taking classes (or at least, that's what I tell myself), so I'm very glad I can take care of it now.

I've had this blog post about respecting your specimens gnawing at me since I read it during the summer, and felt a bit guilty. I had some pretty crappy labels with my specimens, or even worse, no labels at all! For some, I could remember exactly where I was standing when I collected them, so it wasn't a huge problem. But for others...well, those just had to be thrown out as useless.

Some of my specimens were new to the collection and represented unique information, so I wanted to make sure they were properly labeled and taken care of. With that mission in mind, I've devoted myself over the past month to slogging through my material that's been languishing for months (in a few cases, years). And now, I'm beginning to see results!

This box only has six empty spots now.

I've prepared labels for 90 specimens and put many of them under the microscope to identify them as close to species level as I could. This was difficult for a number of them, especially the centipedes, due to lack of practice by me and the lack of recent references, but it's been a fun challenge. I've also found some interesting animals (such as the centipede Theatops, the subject of my previous blog post) and experienced some great memories. Most of my millipedes were collected for a Field Techniques class with the help of two good friends, who spent their evening sampling through leaf litter with me. A scorpion was collected during a summer class in the New Mexican desert, where I learned about arthropod UV fluorescence for the first time.

Now I'm at the point where I can do something with all my collected specimens. Some of what I'm working on includes:

  • A guide to Ohio centipedes, which will be accessible online and will have pictures of certain identification characteristics to make up for the paucity of reference material online.
  • A publication of my assassin bug research
  • A publication/guide of local millipede species

It's exciting to put together what I've been working on for the past few years, and to find new projects. I'm hopeful that what I'm doing will be useful for others interested in these groups in Ohio. There definitely hasn't been much done with centipedes and millipedes, which is a barrier to anyone wanting to learn more about them or do their own research, so maybe this can be a springboard for future studies.

My to-do list: keeping me going. That "hola" has been there for a while, so I couldn't bring myself to erase it.
