So, it?s the weekend and I've been doing my own bit to contribute to the society by heaping my electricity bill while putting in my time on the couch. I am a TV troll. I watch pretty much every TV show you can imagine. Sometimes I wonder how I have time for anything else. Anyway, I digress; back to the point of this post.
Amongst the multitude of reality shows I watch, I noticed a common trend among a majority of the characters that were in relationships: They were living together (a few with kids or planning on having kids). Basically, living like a ?married couple? and for some reason a few of the women were unhappy because "he hadn't put a ring on it."
I look at the couples around me as well and it?s the same situation. One lady in particular stands out to me. She finally got her proposal and is in the thick of planning her wedding. As part of her planning, she has come up with a list of things that must change after marriage. The list includes things like no more late nights with the boys, no friends crashing at their place, and it goes on. They?ve been living together for years and they have two kids (6 & 2). In my eyes, their situation isn?t changing; all they are doing is adding the title of husband/wife and Mrs for the lady.
They already have the companionship, they are sharing responsibilities, supporting each other's dreams and all that good stuff that marriage is supposed to be about. What motivation does the guy have to change his ways? With the current divorce rates I ask, are people getting married just to have the ceremony to splash cash and show off just how much money they are making? Or is it that people believe that the piece of paper they sign will guarantee that they will be together forever? Is getting married just another trend??
I personally feel that if you?ve got a good thing going adding the titles ?Husband? or ?Wife? can only add undue pressure to the relationship. I don?t know if I have been living in my own little bubble for so long that I'm late at noticing this trend, but if so, please forgive me but I still want to hear your thoughts.
In the world we live in today and the way ?dating? is handled, what is the point of marriage??

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Howard Kuljian and his family were out for a walk on a damp, overcast morning at Big Lagoon beach, playing fetch with their dog Fran as 10-foot surf churned the water just feet away like a washing machine.
Signs near the beach warned of "sneaker waves," the kind that suddenly roar ashore.
Kuljian tossed a stick that took the dog down to the water's edge, and in an instant, authorities said, a wave swallowed it, setting off a nightmarish scramble.
"Everything kind of snowballed from there," Coast Guard Lt. Bernie Garrigan said.
Kuljian's 16-year-old son, Gregory, ran to save the dog, only to be captured by the surging surf himself. Kuljian, 54, followed, and then his wife, Mary Scott, 57. On shore, their 18-year-old daughter, Olivia, and Gregory's girlfriend could only watch.
Both parents' bodies were later recovered, but the boy ? presumed dead ? is still missing.
The dog eventually made it back to shore.
News of Saturday's tragedy shocked many in the small college town of Arcata on the rough Northern California coastline about 280 miles north of San Francisco.
Students at Gregory's high school wore green in his memory Monday.
By late afternoon, more than 1,300 people "liked" a Facebook page set up by the teenager's friends called "Wear Green for Geddie" ? using his nickname. Dozens tweeted tributes with the hash-tag (hash)WearGreenForGeddie.
"I will always remember him no matter how long," wrote Emmalaya Owen on the Facebook page. "Especially how he was such an upbeat happy person or how he tried to put up 'Be Happy' propaganda posters he drew around school."
Others were trying to come to terms with the deaths. His sister graduated last year.
"He was just a friendly guy, and everyone who knew him liked him, and his family was very close," said Day Robins, a high school senior. She said Gregory and his family were active in school athletics and sailing.
At Big Lagoon beach, a short drive from Arcata, signs posted near the parking lot warned beachgoers not to turn their back to the surf and to pay special attention to sneaker waves.
"Because the beach is designed that way, when that 10-foot wall breaks, it surges up on the beach and surges back really fast," said Garrigan, the Coast Guard officer. "It's like a cyclical washing machine."
As the family walked along the beach, Howard Kuljian threw the stick and the dog gave chase, said Dana Jones, a state parks district superintendent.
Seeing his son in the water, Kuljian leapt to action, and disappeared into the frigid water.
Gregory managed to pull himself back onto the sand, but after realizing his father was drowning, both he and his mother went in to save him.
As Olivia and the girlfriend watched in horror, a nearby bystander called police. By the time help arrived, it was too late. Jones said the officer wasn't able to get to the family members because of the high surf.
Garrigan said the search for the teenager was stopped because a person without a wetsuit could not survive for long in the cold surf.
The Coast Guard deployed a helicopter and two motorized life boats to find the teenager, but thick coastal fog made the search difficult. The parks department also called off its search.
"When there is shorebreak like that, you don't even have to go into the water to be pulled into the sea," Jones said. "It's a reminder to be real careful around the ocean."

It is found that many developers in National Capital Region (NCR) and Mumbai have cut down property prices by around 15 percent, as demand and rent more or less remains the same.
However, in a few parts of Mumbai, there was nearly 0. 8% improvement in rent, signifying some demand.
Due to weak demand, a lot of real estate agents have already postponed commercial realty projects and switched to residential projects. Few new projects in the first half of the year were launched at reduced price ranges than some existing stocks in the area by developers who are in dire need of cash.
The commercial properties in New Delhi continues to be under pressure while zero projects have been launched presently. But there is an increased demand for commercial properties in Bangalore and Mumbai.

The authors of this volume attempt to cohere the field of creativity and affect in a scholarly fashion by categorizing and characterizing some of its major features, including environmental influences; underlying processes; specific affective states; the role of atypical or pathological personalities; unconscious processes; physiological components; proactive and reactive stimuli; intrinsic motivation; eminence versus everyday creativity; and testing of assessing the affective component of creativity. The authors also examine and discuss the role that emotions, feelings and moods play in the creative process. This volume also provides a vehicle for students and psychotherapists, with which they can fully appreciate the feelings generated by the creative process and the various stages of it. How does a creator feel during its more mundane phases? Can he or she tolerate the frustration of failing and being unsuccessful most of the time? What is the real joy of achievement, success, and ultimate acceptance by ones peers in a given field? Do we have to exhibit major psychopathological features in order to achieve eminence in specific fields? What is the role of mind altering substances, mood disorders, and the like? This volume answers these questions and more. Author: Shaw, Melvin P./ Runco, Mark A./ Shaw, Melvin P. ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? With increasing demands for sustainable energy, being able to cost-efficiently produce biofuels from plant biomass is more important than ever. However, lignin and hemicelluloses present in certain plants mean that they cannot be easily converted into biofuels. A study published in BioMed Central's open access journal Biotechnology for Biofuels appears to have solved this problem, using gene manipulation techniques to engineer plants that can be more easily broken down into biofuels.
Plants high in lignin and hemicelluloses -- lignocellulosic biomass -- have a high content of pentose sugars that are more difficult to ferment into fuels than plants with hexose sugars. In order to be useful for biofuel production, scientists need to be able to engineer plants with smaller amounts of xylan -- the major non-cellulosic polysaccharide -- present in secondary cell walls.
With this in mind, a research group from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, USA, used 3 mutant strains of Arabidopsis deficient in xylan -- irregular xylem (irx) mutants irx7, irx8 and irx9 -- in order to engineer plants with low xylan content and improved properties for easier breakdown of carbohydrate into simple sugars (saccharification). The irx mutants normally exhibit severe dwarf phenotypes that result from xylem vessel collapse and consequent impaired transport of water and nutrients. The team hypothesized that restoring xylan biosynthesis in the plants would complement the mutations.
To reintroduce xylan biosynthesis into the xylem of irx7, 8 and 9, Henrik Scheller and colleagues manipulated the promoter regions of vessel-specific VND6 and VND7 transcription factor genes. Significantly, they found that the ensuing phenotypes completely restored wild-type growth patterns in some cases, resulting in stronger plants with restored mechanical properties, whilst at the same time maintaining a low overall xylan content and improved saccharification properties that allowed for better breakdown into biofuels.
Plants with up to 23% reduction in xylose levels and 18% reduction in lignin content were obtained, whilst normal xylem function was restored. The plants also showed a 42% increase in saccharification yield after pretreatment.
Lead author Scheller said, "These results show that it is possible to obtain plants that have reduced amounts of xylan in their walls while still preserving the structural integrity of the xylem vessels. The xylan engineering system we present here is a great step towards tailored bioenergy crops that can be easily converted into biofuels. He continued, "This approach in Arabidopsis has the potential to be transferred to other biofuel crop species in the near future, in particular, the poplar species."
These results from this study provide hope that a viable alternative to fossil fuels may soon be available.

What have I gotten myself into? I'm usually a wuss when it comes to challenges so I surprised myself by agreeing to participate in Harvard Pilgrim Health Care's Well Together Challenge, which pairs health bloggers who encourage each other to try something new for one month. I've enjoyed reading the other blogger teams' experiences as they braved new fitness classes, cooked with unusual ingredients, meditated, or trialed quick and easy family recipes. Check out Harvard Pilgrim's Facebook page to read those posts and get other great wellness tips.
Well, my turn has come (1st post next week)! My blogger in crime is Michele from A Yummy Mummy, a seriously cool mom with three beautiful young daughters. I was instantly inspired and felt my blood pressure drop when looking at her blissful photography and absorbing the laid-back feel of her blog. Lately my job(s) have become more demanding, which on the one hand is rewarding because my work involves helping people but I've also recognized that when I don't do things that nourish my inner being, I'm a little?lot crankier and feel the boundaries of my world shrinking. So I've come up with two personal weekly challenges inspired by Michele to help change up my routine: 1) Learn hula hooping and 2) Express gratitude for little things during the day that make me smile.
I recall briefly having a hula hoop when I was about 10 years old and could even do it around my knees. But wow has hooping evolved. Some gyms offer weighted hoops as part of a fitness class that strengthens the core, and if you search on YouTube you'll discover that it has become a sport. It's probably bigger in Europe than here as most of the instructors in the videos have European or Australian accents. This one video blew me away (no it's not on fast forward!) and wondered if I could achieve even 30 seconds of what this hooper accomplishes here:
Thankfully, Michele created a great video of tricks for me that feels more manageable.
I'm excited to get started...

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) ? A holiday tradition that benefits local charities gets underway Tuesday night in St. Paul.
It?s the fifth year for drive through light display ?Holiday Lights in the Park? at Phalen Park. It?s great entertainment to look at, but more importantly it provides assistance to local charities.
Organizers with the project said a majority of the displays are new this year, including a finale with an under sea adventure that includes a sunken pirate ship, scuba divers and Santa Claus scuba diving.
It?s also a Minnesota-themed display with the parks and recreation, featuring the biggest display they?ve ever had with all the options people have when they visit the state?s parks. That includes displays for fishing, rock climbing, skiing.
The display costs $10 on weekends and $8 on weekdays to see, and the proceeds go towards four local charities. Those include the Union Gospel Mission, Second Harvest Heartland, a youth program called ?Under Construction? and the St. Paul Parks Conservancy. Entry fees go to those charities, which have partnered with event organizers for the last five years.
The display features hundreds of thousands of LED light bulbs which are energy efficient, running at about one-third the power of a normal light bulb. There are more than 60 light displays for people to take in, and the display goes through Jan. 1, 2013.
There?s a CD soundtrack for sale at Kowalski?s Markets around the Twin Cities, and that purchase gets people a free pass to the display.

Partying is nothing compared to motherhood.
At least that's how Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi feels.
The "Jersey Shore" star, 24, is "obsessed" with 2-month-old son Lorenzo and can't wait to celebrate the holidays with her little meatball.
"Motherhood is perfect!" Snooki told HuffPost Celebrity at MTV's Restore the Shore special on Nov. 15. "I always wanted to be a young mom and I thought [at] 26, and I?m going to be 25, so I kind of did it right. And it just changes your life," she continued. "I don?t care about partying anymore. I haven?t had a drink in, like, a year! Well, not that long, but I don?t think about that stuff anymore. It?s just about family and my business really."
And Snooki's fiance, Jionni LaValle, vouches for her lifestyle change, saying, "she's an unbelievable mother."
"She?s obsessed with him, I'm obsessed ... it?s two months already. It?s crazy," LaValle told HuffPost Celebrity. "It?s a lot of fun, but we?re both very tired. We?re always up taking turns, who?s sleeping, who?s feeding ... but it?s what you got to do."
Although they're not sure whom Lorenzo takes after in the personality department, LaValle knows one thing for certain: "He looks just like Nicole. I mean to the T. It?s crazy."
The happy family is looking forward to being together during the holiday season and already had a great time on Halloween.
"Halloween was canceled because of Sandy, so we just dressed up," Snooki explained. "We just put the costumes on and took a picture so we had a memory and we're going to tell Lorenzo there was a hurricane and you didn't have a first Halloween."
"We were superheroes," LaValle added. "He was Superman, I was Captain America and she was Wonder Woman."
As for Thanksgiving and Christmas, Snooki revealed they're going to spend the holidays in Jersey with LaValle's family.
"It?s a first for everything," LaValle gushed. "Christmas, we can?t wait for, Halloween we couldn?t wait to dress him up. It?s just you can?t wait for everything to come up with him. Now it?s, 'When is he going to walk? When is he going to talk?,' We?re excited."
Snooki and Jionni plan on tying the knot in "a year, a year and a half."

I've had this blog post about respecting your specimens gnawing at me since I read it during the summer, and felt a bit guilty. I had some pretty crappy labels with my specimens, or even worse, no labels at all! For some, I could remember exactly where I was standing when I collected them, so it wasn't a huge problem. But for others...well, those just had to be thrown out as useless.
Some of my specimens were new to the collection and represented unique information, so I wanted to make sure they were properly labeled and taken care of. With that mission in mind, I've devoted myself over the past month to slogging through my material that's been languishing for months (in a few cases, years). And now, I'm beginning to see results!
This box only has six empty spots now.
I've prepared labels for 90 specimens and put many of them under the microscope to identify them as close to species level as I could. This was difficult for a number of them, especially the centipedes, due to lack of practice by me and the lack of recent references, but it's been a fun challenge. I've also found some interesting animals (such as the centipede Theatops, the subject of my previous blog post) and experienced some great memories. Most of my millipedes were collected for a Field Techniques class with the help of two good friends, who spent their evening sampling through leaf litter with me. A scorpion was collected during a summer class in the New Mexican desert, where I learned about arthropod UV fluorescence for the first time.
Now I'm at the point where I can do something with all my collected specimens. Some of what I'm working on includes:
It's exciting to put together what I've been working on for the past few years, and to find new projects. I'm hopeful that what I'm doing will be useful for others interested in these groups in Ohio. There definitely hasn't been much done with centipedes and millipedes, which is a barrier to anyone wanting to learn more about them or do their own research, so maybe this can be a springboard for future studies.
My to-do list: keeping me going. That "hola" has been there for a while, so I couldn't bring myself to erase it.

A limousine is a luxurious sedan driven by a chauffeur. A great way to make a special event more remarkable is a limo. Making a particular celebration, occasion, or vacation all the more amazing may be accomplished using a limo. A sense of prosperity and distinction is provided by a limo. There are numerous companies that lease out limousines for people to use since a limousine is not something which a person generally owns.
Separating the driver from the guests inside a limousine is a divider. Allowing the passengers to communicate confidentially is what this usually soundproof section of glass. The passengers can easily communicate with the driver by opening the windowpane or utilizing an intercom system. This is one reason that people favor a limo to a taxi or other kind of rental car
Limousines may be leased for a couple of hours or perhaps days at a time. A great deal of teenagers lease a limo to attend their prom. If the price is distributed by a group of friends or couples, this can be a lot of fun and comparatively cheap. Whether it is a party, a weekend getaway, or a man planning to pop the question, this can be a good way to start a remarkable night.
If one wishes to lease a limousine, there are many types from which to choose. There are stretch limousines that have an extended framework which makes it lengthier than typical limousines which are great for bigger groups that want to share the same car. Stretch limos are usually black or white and are fairly costly. Many of these limousines hold 6 to 10 passengers even though some companies have created vehicles that hold Twelve guests.
Nowadays, a car designer will produce a designer limousine by adding amenities which are not practical for the utilization of the vehicle but create a fantastic design statement. To be used by customers, many of these designer limousines consist of back axles to support an operational jacuzzi. Modern limousines are made out of many luxury and fast automobiles including Bentley, BMW, Hummer, Infiniti, and Lexus among others. You can even find several limousines that have been made from Corvettes, Ferraris, as well as VW Beetles. NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? The rig owner involved in drilling the ill-fated well that blew out in the Gulf of Mexico and spewed more than 200 million gallons of oil will not have to pay many of the pollution claims because it was shielded in a contract with well-owner BP, a federal judge ruled on Thursday. The ruling comes as BP, the states affected by the disaster and the federal government are discussing a settlement over the nation's largest offshore oil spill.
The decision may have spared Transocean from having to pay potentially billions of dollars in damage claims. However, U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier said the driller still is not exempt from paying punitive damages and civil penalties that arise from the April 20, 2010, blowout 100 miles off the Louisiana coast. Those penalties could amount to billions of dollars.
Law experts were split over who is a clear-cut winner.
BP has been pursuing agreements with multiple parties to reach settlements that would make an upcoming trial involving hundreds of spill lawsuits in New Orleans unnecessary, or at least resolve as many of the issues as possible.
The Justice Department also is involved, working with the states to create an outline for a settlement that would resolve their potentially multibillion dollar claims against BP and the other companies involved in the disaster, Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange told The Associated Press.
Justice led a meeting last week in Washington among the states in an effort to formulate an agreement that would satisfy government and state claims, including penalties and fines, Strange said. He also indicated if there is a settlement that officials are discussing what to do with the $20 billion fund set up by BP to pay victims.
The lead attorneys for individuals and businesses suing BP were not at the meeting.
According to Strange, a federal magistrate judge has been asked to expedite settlement discussions. The Louisiana attorney general's office said in a statement to the AP that it is in settlement discussions with BP, which would not comment on any deals in the works. A first phase of the trial is set for Feb. 27 to determine liability for the spill.
"The closer you get to a trial date, the more pressure builds to reach a settlement," Strange said.
Despite the decision, BP claimed victory and said Barbier's ruling "at a minimum" left Transocean facing "punitive damages, fines and penalties flowing from its own conduct."
Transocean spokesman Lou Colasuonno said in an emailed statement that the company was pleased to see its position affirmed.
"This confirms that BP is responsible for all economic damages caused by the oil that leaked from its Macondo well, and discredits BP's ongoing attempts to evade both its contractual and financial obligations," he said.
Blaine LeCesne, an associate professor at Loyola University law school, however, said Barbier's ruling was a "major victory" for Transocean.
"If anything is going to compel the parties toward settlement, it's going to be this," he said. "I think BP is in a very bad position now, and they don't have a lot of leverage."
A University of Michigan Law School professor who served as chief of the Justice Department's environmental crimes section said the ruling had no clear-cut winner. David Uhlmann said it prevents BP from collecting billions of dollars from Transocean to help cover cleanup costs and pay for claims over economic losses and environmental damage from the spill. But the decision leaves Transocean facing potentially billions of dollars in civil and criminal penalties under the Clean Water Act, he added.
"It's a partial win for each side and a partial loss for each side," Uhlmann said.
BP PLC, Transocean Ltd. and Halliburton Co. have been sparring over who was at fault for causing the blowout. The out-of-control well was capped in July, 2010. Federal investigators have said that BP bears ultimate responsibility for the spill, but has faulted all three companies to some degree.
Under a drilling contract, BP and Transocean agreed to indemnify each other in the case of an accident, with BP taking responsibility for pollution originating from the well and Transocean for any pollution or accidents aboard the rig.
However, in court BP argued that the contract did not shield Transocean if the drilling company acted in manner that was grossly negligent.
Barbier said the contract was a "clear and unequivocal agreement" to provide "broad indemnity."
"As we have said from the beginning, Transocean cannot avoid its responsibility for this accident," BP said.
The British oil giant said it had "stepped up" and admitted its role in the spill and paid billions of dollars in claims.
BP also is eager to resolve its disputes with its partners on the doomed rig. The companies have sued and countersued each other for billions of dollars to protect themselves when it comes to paying damages to victims and penalties to the government.
Months ago, BP offered to resolve its dispute with Transocean if Transocean paid BP roughly $4.5 billion, according to a person briefed on the discussions who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the talks are confidential. Transocean rejected the offer, and there have been no substantive discussions between the companies about figures since then, the person said, adding that Thursday's ruling could spur further talks.
Eric Schaeffer, who led the Environmental Protection Agency's civil enforcement office from 1997 to 2002, said Thursday's ruling will put even more pressure on BP.
"If BP is less able to shift some of those costs to Transocean, if they understand they are going to bear Transocean's share of compensatory damages, I'd want to get it settled," Schaeffer said. "That's no longer a wild card."

What if Neanderthals, who bit the dust just 28,000 years ago, had instead wised up and were now living next door? Or what if, during all these millennia that humans have been evolving, some unrelated creature had evolved cognitive and technological prowess in keeping with our own? Another scenario: what if humans had split into two separate species ? the original gangsters, and a successful evolutionary offshoot?

AMMAN (Reuters) ? At least six people were killed in Syria on Friday and the bodies of six others were turned over to their families, activists said, two days before the Arab League decides whether to keep monitors there despite their failure to halt bloodshed.
But a source at League headquarters in Cairo said member states were leaning towards extending the mission, which expired on Thursday, because of an assessment that the monitors' presence has reduced violence in some areas.
Syrian security men were out in force in several restive towns and cities to counter protests against Bashar al-Assad that often erupt after weekly Muslim prayers, activists said, while supporters of the Syrian president rallied in Damascus.
Hundreds of people have been killed since the monitors arrived in late December in Syria, where an armed insurgency has grown in recent months, challenging Assad's grip on several parts of the country.
Arab foreign ministers will meet in Cairo on Sunday to decide whether to prolong the monitors' one-month mandate.
Critics say the 165 monitors have provided diplomatic cover for Assad to carry on a military crackdown on unrest that the United Nations says has already killed more than 5,000 people.
But the Arab diplomatic source said although League member states remained deeply at odds over how to bring about a lasting solution to Syria's crisis, they now had little option but to renew the observer mission unchanged.
Factors militating for an extension, he said, included the lack of international will for a Libya-style military intervention and a perception that the monitors were helping to curb at least some violence and encouraging peaceful protest.
"The closer Sunday's meetings of the Arab committee and the Arab foreign ministers get, the more the conviction grows that the Arab monitoring mission in Syria should be extended," the source told Reuters.
"Yes, there is not complete satisfaction with Syria's cooperation with the monitoring mission. But in the absence of any international plan to deal with Syria, the best option is for the monitors to stay."
The Syrian authorities accuse foreign-backed militants of killing 2,000 members of the security forces since the unrest began in March, inspired by Arab uprisings elsewhere that have toppled three autocrats.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy said "ferocious repression" of Assad's opponents by the authorities was dragging Syria towards chaos and would only benefit extremists.
He urged the Arab League to intensify its monitoring efforts and called on the U.N. Security Council, so far paralyzed by divisions over Syria, to act.
Security forces thwarted prayers for the fifth Friday in a row at the Omari mosque in the southern town of Deraa, where the anti-Assad revolt began 10 months ago, activists said.
The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said five civilians had been killed in gunfire around the country and a security officer had been assassinated in Deraa, possibly because he had changed sides. In the northwestern province of Idlib, security forces returned the bodies of six people who had disappeared two days earlier, it said.
It was not possible to verify the latest accounts of unrest in Syria, where tight media restrictions are enforced.
PRO-ASSAD CHANTS
At a small pro-Assad demonstration near the Omayyed mosque in Damascus, dozens of young men chanted: "We are your men, Bashar" and "Shabiha forever, for your eyes, Bashar," a reference to a militia that operates alongside security forces.
Houssam Younis, an army conscript at the rally, said Assad should use "full force" to crush armed insurgents.
"The army is facing hell from them in Homs and Hama. We do not want reforms. We want to finish those terrorists first. The people should be united against them," he told Reuters.
Sudanese General Mohammed al-Dabi, head of the monitoring mission, was expected to fly to Cairo, headquarters of the Arab League, on Saturday to report on what his 165-strong team has witnessed since it deployed in Syria.
Burhan Ghalioun, head of the opposition Syrian National Council, was also due in the Egyptian capital, where he planned to meet the League's secretary-general, Nabil Elaraby.
New York-based Human Rights Watch said the League should publish Dabi's report in full and should urge the U.N. Security Council to impose targeted sanctions, including an arms embargo, to stop the killing in Syria.
Russia and China, which wield vetoes in the Security Council, oppose any U.N. sanctions on Syria.
Sanctions imposed by Western countries, and disruption caused by the uprising, are battering the Syrian economy. Syria plans to introduce a managed float of its exchange rate, effectively devaluing the currency, its central bank governor Adib Mayaleh told the Financial Times on Friday.
The value of the Syrian pound has fallen by a third on the black market during the unrest, according to exchange dealers.
A Western embargo on Syrian oil exports has cost the country $2 billion since September, the state news agency SANA quoted Oil Minister Sufian Alao as saying.
Alao said Syria was still trying to replace European Union crude oil contracts with new customers, but was having trouble securing shipping insurance and trade credit.
The EU, which bought most of Syria's approximately 130,000 barrels per day of oil exports, imposed sanctions on Syrian oil on September 2, following a similar decision by the United States.
Syrian oil exports are tiny when compared to those of the main Middle East exporters and the sector does not dominate the economy as it does elsewhere in the region, but it does provide revenue the government relies on.
EU governments are expected on Monday to expand a Syria sanctions list against individuals, companies and institutions.
Alao said attacks on oil and gas pipelines and other energy installations had killed 21 workers, disrupted supplies and caused damage estimated at 2 billion pounds ($34 million).
The Arab League suspended Syria and announced sanctions for its failure to comply with a November peace plan which required that it halt the bloodshed, withdraw military forces from the streets, free detainees, provide access to Arab monitors and the media, and open a political dialogue with opposition groups.

Wheelchair-bound Kerry lost her fight for life yesterday just weeks after docs told her the disease had spread.
The mum-of-one ? who found fame as a finalist on the show ? passed away at her home in Pumpherston, West Lothian.
Finalist ... Kerry starred on X Factor
She had been supported throughout her illness by mentor Sharon Osbourne, 59.Last night grieving Sharon paid tribute to the brave singer.
She said: "I am so sad about Kerry's passing. Much love and respect to her and her family."
Kerry ? who had a six-year-old son Joshua with 35-year-old partner Dean Robertson ? had enjoyed a quiet Christmas celebration with her loved ones before taking a turn for the worse on Boxing Day and going into hospital.
A source said: "She was in a lot of constant pain. They didn't keep her in though. She was allowed to go home. She spent New Year surrounded by her loved ones, and passed away yesterday morning."
Talent ... Kerry at show audition
Kerry was diagnosed with cancer in September 2010 after suffering two years of stomach pains. She underwent three months of gruelling chemotherapy which almost left her DEAF and lost her long blonde hair.
But even after docs warned her in November that her health was deteriorating she refused to give up.
In an exclusive interview with The Scottish Sun last year, she told how she couldn't wait to watch her little boy open his gifts on Christmas Day. She said: "There was a time when I thought I wouldn't see this Christmas, but I'm going to. It's my dream."
Kerry sang with dance band QFX and starred in kids' TV series Grange Hill during her career.
But it was the 2006 series of X Factor that saw her hit the big time ? the year Leona Lewis took the crown.
She won a legion of fans with covers of hits including Rod Stewart's I Don't Want To Talk About It and You Are The Sunshine Of My Life by Stevie Wonder.
And we can reveal Kerry's death comes just weeks before she was set to record a duet with Britain's Got Talent sensation Susan Boyle this month.
The pair were planning to collaborate on Wings to Fly ? and Kerry had been rehearsing her part as recently as Christmas Eve.
Our source revealed: "Susan wrote in her autobiography that Kerry was her inspiration to go on Britain's Got Talent. They were due to re-record Susan's song as a duet in January."
